Bunmi Akinbanjo: Africa’s FinTech Giant

Bunmi Akinyemiju is the CEO, Co-Founder and MD of Venture Garden Group and Founding Partner, GreenHouse Capital. He completed his primary and secondary education in Nigeria but later furthered his education in the United States, where he obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering from the Michigan State University. After which left the US to invest in Nigeria. Bunmi has over twenty-three years of experience as a techpreneur, leader, and Venture Capital investor in innovative technology companies across the globe. Through GreenHouse Capital, he has invested in over 25 innovative technology companies in Africa, including Flutterwave, Wallets Africa, Helium Health, and Resource. He now serves as the Head of the Digital Economy Policy Commission at the Nigerian Economic Summit Group, where he assists in shaping the
Nigerian technology landscape, through policy advocacy and effective collaboration, in hopes that Nigerian politicians will do the same.
In 2017, Bunmi was nominated as one of the top 100 Most Influential People of African Descent in Business and Entrepreneurship by the United Nations. Subsequently, he also received the Trailblazer Award at the Nigerian American Multicultural Council. His company, VGG, was also recognized for its support to the Federal Government in digitizing National Social Investment intervention delivery and technologies that solve
socio-economic challenges among Nigerians. Greenhouse Capital has invested in multiple startups since its inception and has been a powerful presence in the fintech industry since then. In 2021, the hosted an accelerator programme that granted 8 startups the opportunity to be wired $10 000 in investment funding, along with the backing of VGG. It was aimed at African fintech startups; two of the winners were Kenyan startups while 6
were Nigerian. He and Demuren Olufemi Olukunmi, the co-founder of Venture Garden Group, began their journey for Africa in 2011, when they suspected that there was more to be done in terms of technology, and they have scaled VGG into Africa’s largest technology holding company, building and scaling innovative companies solving inefficiencies in high impact sectors across the continent, for Africans to enjoy. So far, they have harnessed the power of talent and research to realize their vision of a new Africa, one led by innovation and technological disruption.
